Bridges Family History
This interesting name, contrary to appearances, has two possible origins, one the perhaps obvious English topographical or occupational one, and the other locational, from Belgium. Firstly, then, the modern surname Bridges or Brydges usually derives from the early Medieval English topographical surname for someone who lived near a bridge, or from a metonymic occupational name for a bridge keeper; building and maintaining bridges was one of the three main feudal obligations in the Middle Ages, the others being the bearing of arms when required and the maintenance of fortifications. The derivation for this source is from the Middle English 'brigge', from the Old English pre 7th Century 'brycg', bridge...Select Audience

I'm looking for clues about an ancestor, Edward Bridges, born 1708 in "Ireland" but I don't know which county, city, town, etc., and died in 1741 in Philadelphia. Possible spelling is Brydges. I've seen one record indicating he ran a dry goods store called The Scales at Front St. and Walnut St. in Philadelphia. He apparently married Cornelia Colepepper, an English woman, in an English Episcopal Church in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, in 1734.They had three kids, one born in Rotterdam and two born in Philadelphia. His grave is in the Christ Church Burial Ground in Philadelphia where Benjamin Franklin is also buried.
