This interesting name is of early medieval English topographical origin, and is derived from the Anglo-Norman French "castel", castle, fortified building or set of buildings, especially the residence of a feudal lord. The name could also have denoted a servant who lived and worked at such a place. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names. My name is Deb House. I was born and still live in Ohio, USA. My grandmother, Hazel Roberts (nee Castle), left papers when she passed that her grandfather was Christopher Gustav Castle. She wrote that he was born in Aug 1824 in Westmeath. The only other info I have on him was after he moved to the USA. I was informed by another researcher that she found info that he landed in the USA in Maine with potential brother, Frank, in 1836. There is a newspaper article about him stating he came to the USA when he was 12. I know that he married Mary Roberts while in Ohio. I have no other info regarding him. He is my brick wall.
