Pitts Family History
Recorded in the spellings of Pit, Pitt, and the patronymics Pits, Pitts and Pitson, this is an English surname. It is residential and derives from the Olde English pre 7th century word "pytt" meaning a pit or hollow, and given to one residing by this natural or man-made feature. Residential surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages. In some cases the surname can be locational from one of the places called Pitt as recorded in Hampshire, or from Pett in East Sussex.Select Audience

Pamela
Hello, My name if Pamela (Pitts) Green. My family is from the deep south in the U.S. I have found that Pitts is predominately an English name. Most of my family came from England, Ireland, Wales and Scotland. The towns were Kent, Tenterden, Hemyock, Devonshire and the Wycroft Castle in Devonshire (John Every). They came to Colonial Virginia around the 1600's and migrated south to Tennessee & the surrounding areas in the south. Originally, my genetics are scandanavian. They must have moved south east at one point. I'm interested in knowing about the name if anyone has more information. Thx

The Pitts name can be found throughout the British Isles, but now DNA and some recorded history says their origin is from the Emerald Island.
The Pitts story [dominated by DNA tribal marker R1b-L513, Subgroup B2] can trace their origins to the Finn Valley in Donegal, Ireland from 50 BCE. Perhaps the journey begins with the Clanna Dedad; Deda, son of Sen or Deda Mac Sin.
The Pitts surname origin is from Clan Domnaill [DNA Tribe R1b-L513, Subgroup B1] and relations who remain in Ireland take the modern surname (Oโ)Donnelly, McDonald and Donohue in Ireland. The Domnaill name is also found in Brittany, France according to research from the Centre de Recherche Bretonne et Celtique. It is a very old name which appears in the 5th century Rom
