Willis Family History
Recorded in many spellings including Willas, Wiles, Willes, Wills, Willys, Williss, Willos and Wileson, this is an English patronymic surname. It is however arguably of early Germanic or Anglo-Saxon pre 7th century origins deriving from the popular personal name William, composed of the elements "wil" meaning will or desire, and "helm", a helmet or protector. This name was particularly popular with the Norman-French and became so in both England and to a lesser extent, Scotland, after the 1066 conquest. Robertus filius Willelmi is recorded in the famous Domesday Book of 1086, whilst amongst the early hereditary recordings is that of Richard Willam in the Hundred Rolls of Oxfordshire in 1275...Select Audience

My name is Tracy Royce Willis and I am tracing my family roots back to England. I believe they first settled in Isle of Wright, VA, USA after leaving Devon England, and I'm trying to verify this information. Here is a link that a distant relative created with the info: https://www.ncgenweb.us/cumberland/rwillis.htm Any help or guidance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!????

I'm looking for my 7th or 8th great-grandfather who was probably born in England. The name would have probably been Benjamin Willis, as his son in North Carolina was Benjamin II.

Great grandfather, John Ashley Willis, think he was born in Georgia, fought for Confederate States of America while still a teen ager. Died an old man in Duncan, Oklahoma and is buried in local cemetery. I have seen the grave site myself. Died in early 1900s. Family lore was he swan a river and ran away to Indian Territory, OK because he was wanted for murder in Alabama and never found or arrested in the upheaval after war. Don't know how true all that is. His son, John Grover Willis, was my father's father. I know very little about the Willis family. My father John Aaron was born in Perrin County, Texas and died in Little Rock, Arkansas. My older brother is deceased; my younger brother has never fathered a son. We had some Willis first cousins in New Mexico, but have lost touch with them. Few sons born to that line and fewer alive.

Interested in my Willis family history. Thomas John Willis Sr was my grandfather from Ireland, came to USA with family settled in Toms River, NJ USA. Oldest son Thomas John Willis Jr was my Dad. Believe gramps was born in 1889. My gramps was married twice. Once in Toms River, six sons, and then my Grandmother Margaret Gooch Willis and had 17 children. My cousins, about 60 of us want to know our history. Thank you.
