Clay Family History
This interesting surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and has two possible sources. Firstly, the surname may be a topographical name for someone who lived in an area of clay soil, deriving from the Olde English pre 7th Century "claeg", clay. Topographical surnames were among the earliest created, since both natural and man-made features in the landscape provided easily recognisable distinguishing names in the small communities of the Middle Ages. In some instances the surname may be an occupational name for someone who worked in a clay pit, or worked with clay, for examples someone who built with wattle and daub. Job descriptive surnames originally denoted the actual occupation of the namebearer, and later became hereditary...Select Audience

Andrew
I'm looking for information about an edward george clay, my great grandfather.
He was I think half italian and married an Irish woman called Kate Lynn, maybe known as Ellen? perhaps spelt differently.
They came to england Yorkshire from I think northern ireland just before my grandads birth in 1896/7, he's also edward george clay, known as teddy clay.
They later lived in london as I now do.
They performed singing and playing piano in a group called the Dickson trio, my grandad called himself teddy dickson when performing.
If anybody knows anything about this please get in contact, I'd love to find out more about my clay ancestry.
Thanks ?
