Crowe Family History
This surname, with variant spelling Crow, has two distinct possible origins, one English and the other Gaelic Irish. In the first instance, the derivation is from the Middle English "crowe" (Olde English "crawa"), meaning "crow", and originally given as a nickname to someone thought to bear a fancied resemblance to the bird, perhaps someone with particularly dark hair. The surname from this source first appears on record in the latter part of the 12th Century (see below). Other early recordings include: Nicholas Crowe, in the 1187 Pipe Rolls of Norfolk, and William Croe, in the Hundred Rolls of Suffolk, dated 1273...Select Audience

Ralph E Bedwell
My earliest known Crowe ancestor is Michael Crowe, born about 1813 in Ireland, county unknown (my American grandmother, the daughter of Thomas Crowe and Mary Gibbs, told my dad that her Irish family came from County Clare, but I have not been able to confirm that). He emigrated to Ontario province in Canada sometime around 1845. His son, Thomas Crowe, whose picture is attached, was born in 1851 in Scarborough, Canada and emigrated to Chicago, Illinois as a young man.
