This interesting and unusual surname is of Anglo-Saxon origin, and is of locational derivation either from a place called Shepley in Yorkshire, or from places called Shipley in Derbyshire, Durham, Northumberland, Shropshire, Sussex and Yorkshire. The place in Derbyshire is found as "Scipelie" in the Domesday Book of 1086, and Shipley in Yorkshire appears as "Scipeleia", also in the Domesday Book. Hello! I'm just starting out in my research tracing my family back from Indiana, United States. I took a DNA test to start and am going off of the common knowledge passed down by family members and not much else. My last name is Shively and when I search it often leads to Shipley. My father often said that his father would tell him where the family came from in Ireland but he could not remember the name or details. So relying on this small amount of information and the DNA test that points to County Dublin as the strongest match for area in Ireland I'm beginning my search. I thought I would give this site a try thinking perhaps if the name Shively comes from Shipley, someone else may have come across your path previously. If this is the case, it would be helpful to know so I can at least know I'm on the right track. Best wishes and thank you for any help you can provide in advance.
