Strain Family History
Recorded in several forms including Strachan (Scotland), Strahan, Straughan (England), Strain and Straine (Northern Ireland), this is a surname of Scottish origins. It is generally pronounced "Strawn", a form which has lead to the development of the alternative spellings. The original name derives from the lands of Strachan in the former county of Kincardinshire, but it would seem that the name was quite early into England as amongst the recordings in the early surviving church registers are those of Richard Streyn who married Margaret Conye at Northwood in Hampshire on July 29th 1555, whilst in on April 23rd 1846, Mary Strain, given as being a spinster aged thirty seven, was a passenger on the ship "Brothers of Newry"...Select Audience

I can only find to my GGG grandfather born in 1780 in Ireland. the Ancestry info I got shows Down, Newry, and Armagh. I am not familiar at all with Ireland but as my husband is german descent and is in Campbell clan, it got me wondering what clan I come from! Very nice connecting with you.

My family, as far as I can reach, begins with Thomas Strain (1780). his son Mortimer Strain 1821-1864, John Henry Strain Smith 1845-1913, Edward Franklin Smith 1876-1970. I knew Edward Frankllin but all the rest I am finding in Ancestry. I am trying to learn more about my ancestors and also what clan we are. I appreciate any help you can give me.
